Desperation

People have a tendency to travel through life unaware of what is going on. We are taught that it is good to try to avoid pain. Desperation is one of those emotions that people will do almost anything to get rid of. In fact, the desire to avoid it is so great that individuals will manipulate themselves into believing that everything is alright. However, if the person only learned how valuable the emotion can be, his or her life would take a radical turn.
Pain can be a good thing if we know how to gauge what it is telling us. Of course, the idea is not to go out seeking to get ourselves into a state of complete desperation. Yet, life has a way of delivering exactly what we need through the different situations that we encounter. Becoming mindful of the guidance these circumstances offer us is what gets us onto the path of success.

There are basically two reasons why anyone does anything. The first motivating factor is pleasure. People do things because it makes them feel good. On the other hand, people are also motivated by pain. In this instance, they do something because they do not want to experience the negative consequences associated with inactivity. A person filing income taxes who must pay is an example of someone motivated by the pain. Failure to pay one's taxes can have dire consequences.

As much as people enjoy feeling pleasurable, they tend to be motivated by pain the majority of the time. Typically, someone will not make a change until enough pain is experienced. This is where desperation is an ideal teacher. The key is to welcome this emotion into your life. Once an individual reaches the point of desperation, the willingness to make adjustments is not far behind. Some of the greatest achievements are realized only after reaching this point.

Look at some of the most successful people and it is quickly realized that desperation is part of their story. The number of wealthy individuals who went bankrupt is endless; Marc Victor Hanson, Robert Allen, and Donald Trump are a few examples. Also, addicts only begin their road to recovery after they have it the point of complete desperation. The 12 steps programs refer to this state as incomprehensible demoralization. Before this state is reached, the user is unwilling to do what is necessary to get clean. Their willingness is in direct proportion to the pain experienced.

Everyone has this tendency in their lives. If you are totally unhappy with the present circumstances in your life, then get enthusiastic. Following the lessons of your emotions will offer you a tremendous breakthrough. This most likely is the motivation that was previously missing from your life. You now have the willingness to make the changes necessary to get yourself on the proper path. Life has so much to offer you. Your inner being knows this already. The frustration that you have is because your crave to live at a higher level than you are.

To get the maximum benefit out of desperation, it is important that we ask ourselves some hard questions. What is it that you are presently dissatisfied with? Is it something that you can change with what you have or do you need more (schooling, help, financing, etc..)? What will get you excited about your life? Is there something that you can do today that will get you moving in the direction of your dreams? Who can you enlist to assist you in your endeavor? Getting the answers to these will provide you will the direction that you should follow. Keep the pain from the desperation fresh in your mind especially when you encounter obstacles along the way. Welcome desperation as one the powerful teacher it is.
